Boston, part 1 [rp thread for alan_shore]
At 3:55pm, Julianna gets out of the elevator at the law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt.  She takes in the crispness of her surroundings--the chrome and glass, mixed with cool carpeting and wall decor gives off an affluent yet functional vibe.  She doesn't quite fit in with the passing attorneys and clients in their well-tailored suits and skirts.  She's dressed like she would be any other day--gray loose-fitting sweater over a white camisole, comfortable-fitting black slacks.  Sure, she has an appointment, but she also had a car ride from Manhattan and frankly, comfort has always been key with her.  She's tall, around 5'10, and walks with confidence up to the reception area.

"Julianna Cox for Alan Shore," she says. "I have a four-o-clock appointment."

"Have a seat, please, and he'll be with you in a moment," Alan's assistant says, sounding supremely unconcerned. She's pretty in a nondescript way--shoulder-length brown hair, full mouth--but she's no Melissa Hughes. Or Catherine Piper, for that matter.

In fact, several minutes pass before Alan deigns to appear. As usual, he sports an impeccable suit, tasteful tie, and a hint of a smirk. "Julianna," he greets. "Such a pleasure to finally meet you. I hope Boston's been treating you well."

Julianna stands from where she's been sitting and matches him for height when she does so. If she's phased by his fancy suit or the smirk, she doesn't show it.

"Alan Shore." She holds out her hand. "I haven't had time for Boston to treat me anything, but it's nice to meet you as well."

Well, it's always difficult to intimidate somebody who knows they'd have only to slap on some makeup and a rubber nose to reduce you to a wimpering child.

Alan takes her hand, gives it a firm shake. "You just arrived in town," he says, eyebrows inching a little higher.

"We did. I did," she quickly corrects herself. "Came from New York, got a bit of a late start."

She smiles, sheepishly.

Between the smile and the slip of the tongue, Alan gets the picture. The frame, too.

"I know how that is," he says impassively, holding her gaze long enough to test the bounds of politeness. Then he blinks, produces a smile, gestures down the hall. "My office is right this way."

As he gazes at her, she looks right back, unbothered. When he motions toward his office, she follows him, still revealing no motive for why she's here. "Great."

Alan's office--in a passable imitation of a gentleman, he holds the door open for Julianna--is austere. Stylish, to be sure, but comparatively unadorned. No diplomas hang on the wall. His desk boasts no framed pictures of family members.

"Have a seat," he invites, unbuttoning his suit jacket and settling into his desk chair.

She sits, glancing around, noting the impersonal nature of the place.

"You had a legal matter you wished to discuss with me," he prompts. "Something uniquely suited to a man of my particular skills and talents and therefore--I presume--interesting."

"It's...less of a legal matter and...more of a...former client of yours...that I'd like to discuss," Julianna admits, giving a small smile.

"You didn't--" Alan chuckles. "Doctor, I sincerely hope you didn't drive all this way to hear a lecture on attorney-client privilege."

He seems genuinely amused.

"Obviously not," she rolls her eyes. "I plan on asking you purely non-confidential things. And as I already told you, I was coming to Boston anyway, on a related matter."

"Joey Heric." Julianna's eyes narrow slightly. "What words are the first ones to come to mind when you hear his name?"

If her aim was to elicit some sort of telling reaction, Julianna will be disappointed.

"'Acquitted'," Alan says flatly. "The only one that counts."

Unlike "charming," "shrewd," and "dangerous."

Julianna looks incredulous. "Look, this is serious. Anything that you can tell me, without breaking attorney-client privilege, I would greatly appreciate."

Alan laughs. Once.

"Doctor," he says. If she looks incredulous, he looks amazed. "You phoned me yesterday, alluded in the vaguest of terms to a legal matter that might merit my attention. I've since invited you into my office, seated you in that nice, comfy chair, and submitted to your questioning. In exchange for these courtesies, I've asked for nothing, and yet you"--Alan smiles a not-entirely-pleasant smile--"you have the audacity to demand that I be forthright while you yourself have been anything but."

"You're right." She sighs, looking away. "The...matters that surround this...are a difficult subject for me. And--" She looks back up at him, her eyes serious, void of pretense. "Joey Heric has exploited that fact...for his own sick little game. I need to find out more about him, aside from what I now know from court documents and police records. From someone besides myself who's actually interacted with him."

She's always hated that she's bad at reading people. Good at remembering them later, bad at first impressions, always willing to believe the best in people, despite her experience.

"When we met...you seemed trustworthy. When I saw your name--as Joey's last counsel--I thought maybe...you could help."

"Wine or scotch?" Alan asks, rising. Neither strikes him as particularly appropriate--wine too romantic, scotch too strong, at least for the time of day and the company. "I apologize for the limited selection."

"Scotch sounds perfect," Julianna says, watching the lawyer get up.

Not that she drinks excessively (most of the time), but Julianna does know how to handle her liquor.

Alan arches a brow; the corner of his mouth twitches. "A woman who knows what she wants."

His back to her, he removes two glasses from the cabinet, sloshes scotch into each.

"I love the phrase 'fixing a drink,'" he confides, returning to the desk and setting her scotch in front of her. "It sounds so productive."

Julianna chuckles, taking her drink. "I suppose it does."

She waits a moment before taking a drink. When she finally does, she stares into the glass a moment, as if she's thinking about it, concentrating as the scotch goes down her throat.

It's good scotch--twelve-year-old Macallan, smooth but not at the expense of complexity. Alan allows himself a sip, half-closes his eyes as the whisky loosens something inside him.

"So. Joey Heric."

"A talented one," Alan says. Leave it to the legal profession to render the adjective 'good' ambiguous.

"I imagine he would. He's very clever--but also anxious that his cleverness not go unrecognized."
