This is a ficlet/RP journal for the Homicide: Life on the Street character Julianna Cox. I am not Julianna Cox, or the actress who portrays her, Michelle Forbes. Julianna Cox and all H:LOTS characters belong to Tom Fontana and NBC Universal. No copyright infringement is intended - this is all in good fun.
dr. julianna cox [in a nutshell] +

Likes: nature, the outdoors, hiking, skiing, trying new things, reading, classic literature, classic movies, popcorn, comfort food, coffee, scotch, beer, casual attire, sarcasm.

Dislikes: frilly things, anything requiring a lot of maintenance, uncalled for rudeness,

Personality traits/weaknesses:

Julianna is friendly and sees herself as open-minded. She’s pretty liberal as far as politics go, but she doesn’t like getting into arguments and considers herself accepting of people of diverse beliefs. She was raised occasionally going to a Protestant church but isn’t quite sure at this point in her life what she believes any more, though she would like to still believe there’s a God out there.

She likes meeting new people and isn’t afraid to start up conversation with strangers. She can be a practical joker and can take a joke just as well as she can dole one out. At work, she’s mostly all business. She takes her job very seriously and does the best she can at it. When she worked in Buffalo and Baltimore, she was close to the detectives and other law enforcement personnel she worked with, but after leaving Baltimore, she’s maintained more of a distance between herself and co-workers.

Julianna likes to try new things, but this can also be a fault. She can also be a risk-taker, sometimes recklessly so, especially when it comes to men and alcohol.
pre-show [non-canon] history +
Julianna Cox was born January 8,1965, the only child of Joe and Ann Cox. She was raised in and around Baltimore, Maryland. From the time she was born until she was four, she lived with her parents in a country house about an hour outside of the city. When she was four, her father got a job in Baltimore and so the family moved accordingly. She’s a lifelong Orioles fan, though she doesn’t keep up with them obsessively.

As an only child, Julianna grew up a bit of a loner. Overall, her childhood was fairly normal. She was close to her father, who spoiled her, but often got into disagreements with her mother, who wanted her to be more like the other girls her own age. She was a tomboy who much rather enjoyed being outdoors than playing inside. To this day she still enjoys taking hikes or trying new sports.

Julianna was also inquisitive from an early age. In particular, she was interested in nature and the human body. As a child, she constantly asked questions about why things happened and how they worked. As a teenager, when other girls her age were squeamish at dissecting frogs in biology class, Julianna found it fascinating and wanted to know more.

After high school graduation, in 1982, Julianna attended the University of Maryland at Baltimore, where she majored in Biology. While she was a sophomore in college, Julianna’s mother passed away due to an unexpected brain aneurysm. It was an event that Julianna never handled properly. Instead, she chose to push down a lot of her feelings and bury herself in school work.

Her senior year of college she was accepted to SUNY Buffalo’s School of Medicine, where she would go on to receive her medical degree. She chose Buffalo because of the more rural environment and the fact that she felt she needed a change of scenery after her mother’s death.

Eventually, she chose Pathology as her course of specialty. For the first five years of her career (1991-1995) she worked in Buffalo as a junior assistant medical examiner for the Erie County Department of Health.

show [canon] history [taken primarily from the Julianna Cox entry at Wikipedia.] +
From 1996-1998, Julianna was the chief medical examiner for the City of Baltimore. She came back to her native Baltimore because her father, who had suffered severe injuries in a car accident, was in frail health. Within days of her arrival, he passed away, an event that left her devastated. She compensated for this by speeding and drinking a lot.

As the chief M.E., Julianna often worked with the Baltimore Homicide unit. She distinguished herself by being more friendly and personable with the detectives than her predecessors had been. She would go out of her way to interact with them, occasionally making trips to go visit them.

Julianna was very good at her job. She was award winning and it was noted that under her supervision, the Baltimore morgue had become one of the top-notch facilities in the country. She did not tolerate sloppy work or incompetence, and fired a morgue worker who stole jewelry belonging to a murder victim. She was also a regular at the Waterfront Bar.

Upon meeting the detectives from Homicide, Julianna was immediately attracted to Detective Mike Kellerman during a time when he was under investigation for corruption and sidelined from active duty. Both in need of comfort, they had a one-night stand that turned into a very open, laid-back sort of pseudo-relationship which mostly consisted of them getting drunk and having sex. The relationship eventually went downhill fast, however, and they distanced themselves. She also briefly had a relationship with Detective Tim Bayliss, however she later admitted that it had been mostly because she wanted someone to be with over the holidays

Toward the middle of 1998, a truck driver working for the State ran a car off the road, killing the driver and leaving his wife a quadriplegic. Facing a multi-million dollar lawsuit, the State Department of Health and Human Services pressured Julianna to alter the evidence and report that the car driver was legally intoxicated. She refused to lie, so she was fired. Later, she found out the city had settled for $45 million with the wife.

At that point, Julianna said goodbye to Kellerman and lamented that they hadn't put together a real relationship, implying she would have stayed around if they had.
post-show [non-canon] history +
Julianna left Baltimore not long after. She spent over a year traveling, as she had told Kellerman she might, living off of money she'd saved along with the inheritance she'd received when her father died. Eventually, she came back to Maryland and was able to get a job in the Montgomery County coroner’s office out of Takoma Park, a suburb of D.C. She returned to Baltimore in early 2000 after the shooting of former Homicide Lieutenant Al Giardello, to assist with the investigation. Aside from that instance, she hasn’t returned to Baltimore very often. In fact, the last time she went was for the funeral of Bayliss, who killed himself not long after Giardello’s death.

After working in the suburbs for awhile, Julianna finally got up the nerve to return to the big city – not Baltimore this time, but New York. She’s lived there since late 2007 and as of April 2008, has been working as an Assistant Medical Examiner with the City of New York. It’s a far cry from being the Chief, but she’s not sure she’d ever want responsibility like that again. She’s enjoying being in a big city again and getting reacquainted with the territory that comes with being a big-city M.E.
